This week's topic is helping your children identify their feelings and process their feelings. Whether or not you realize it, you likely have already been helping your child form the words to identify their feelings from the time they were a baby. As caregivers we may say things like "oh, you're so sad right now" when your infant is crying or "oh, you're really mad." Small comments like these help your child to connect the word to the feeling they're having inside their body. This continues to help your child in being able to say what feeling they're having as they continue to grow. Children that are able to talk about their feelings are more likely to individually cope and use trusted adults to aid them in coping with the big feeling they're having.
Ways that you can help your children identify and process their feelings:
*Reflect the feeling you're noticing outloud to them ("you seem mad/sad/scared/happy/excited/frustrated right now").
*Help them regulate before talking to them about what led to their feelings. This can be done through leading them through deep breathing exercises (more info on this to come in later Mental Health Monday posts), big muscle activities (jumping jacks, throwing a ball, etc.)
*Once regulated, validate their feelings and help them identify what led up to their big feeling as well as what could be done differently to help them the next time they have a big feeling ("I noticed you got frustrated when you couldn't open the lid. That can be super frustrating! What would help you the next time you're starting to get frustrated?").
*Ask your child about the feelings they noticed themselves having throughout the day while they were away from you, or reflect feelings back as they tell you stories. "What feelings did you have when you were at school today?" "Oh, that sounds like it would be scary." Small reflections can go a long way in building your child's feelings vocabulary and helps them to feel understood.
